I first had to reinvent my leadership when I made a big decision to leave a very successful sales career in corporate America and start my first business. 10-years later, my “new” business was thriving and I had become “successfully miserable”. It was time to reinvent — grow, stretch, expand — my leadership again.
People — our clients, colleagues, family members — are attracted to us because of who we are as leaders: successful, high-achieving, glass-half-full type people. When we stop being who we are, others will notice, and our business and personal results will plummet.
Has this ever happened to you? Have you reached a plateau in your business and/or personal life? Complacency, boredom, and arrogance, happen to the best of us. And if you find your career or personal life has stalled, make a great decision and reinvent your leadership right away.
I just delivered the opening keynote speech at an annual event of very successful and motivated financial service professionals. One of the CEOs in attendance asked how he can help his team reinvent their leadership if and when it is necessary. So here are some simple action steps to reinvent, reinvigorate, and reboot your — or your team’s — leadership:
Get Into Action Now: Here are some ideas to reinvent your leadership:
1. Get a mentor. If you are in any type of leadership role, a mentor can help guide you, your career, and leadership in the right direction. Having a mentor is especially important if you are in a C-suite role — its lonely at the top.
2. Try mentoring others. The simple, selfless act of helping others allows you to grow as a leader. And remember, the more you give, the more you receive.
3. Join a mastermind group. Join a group of like-minded professionals NOT related to your business. Find a place where you can open up and honestly share what you are struggling with. A mastermind group is an amazing resource to help you reinvent your leadership and fuel-inject your motivation.
Now the choice to reinvent your leadership is just that — a choice. You can choose to maintain the status quo as a leader, or, you can choose to reinvent when the time is right. Take a look — what do you choose?
